Herut Party Rescinds Supreme Court Appeal
2006-03-12
Early this morning, the Herut Party rescinded its appeal to Israel's High Court of Justice to review Central Elections Committee Chief Justice Dorit Beinisch's demand to remove what she deemed "racist" portions of Herut's election jingle.
Party officials reportedly felt they would not get a fair hearing "in the current atmosphere" and therefore pulled the appeal. The justices, in their letter, noted Herut's continued insistence that there was no justification in disqualifying a portion of its jingle.
Beinisch asserted that the line "A good Arab is not a dead Arab - a good Arab sometimes wants to leave," constituted "incitement to racism." Herut maintained it was a reference to the Party's main contention that a majority of Palestinian Arabs are prepared to leave Israel if compensated.
"For 2,000 years, the Jewish people have lived as a minority," said Herut Party Chairman Michael Kleiner. "Herut believes in the Palestinians' right to join the Arab majority in any one of the 22 Arab countries and not remain a minority in the State of Israel."
