Assassinating Annapolis 2007-10-22 The media went crazy early this week with stories of a thwarted assassination attempt on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert by Fatah terrorists. And now the public is being fed elaborate explanations and fantastic cover-ups to confuse us into not being able to learn anything from the story. The fact that our establishment is now trying to cover-up and deny a plan by Fatah assassins (who are obviously connected to Abu Mazen) against an Israeli prime minister should not surprise us. If properly absorbed by the Israeli public, this information could quickly expose Abu Mazen for the non-entity he is and endanger the chances of the Annapolis conference even taking place next month. In truth, all of the confusing stories softening this botched assassination attempt are meant to distract us from the reality that Israel has no partner for peace. What Olmert is really trying to do is a unilateral withdrawal disguised as a peace agreement. The problem for our prime minister is that after the disaster of the Gaza withdrawal, Olmert cannot sell a similar move to the public. He therefore needs to create the illusion that he is actually entering into an agreement with someone. The Middle East Conference in Annapolis is a lose/lose situation for Israel. Either there will be an agreement that will endanger our future here or there will be no agreement and the world will then blame us for blocking a peace agreement. |
